January 5, 2011 KJack I have a Laptop (Vista) and a new desktop (Win7). Some folders are accessible under every partition, even though the partitions are listed as "access denied". I resolved the problem last night, using MSCONFIG to selectively choose services to run at XP startup. (As said, I figured it had to be something that didn't run in Safe EVERYTHING WORKS GREAT WITH MY OTHER MACHINE WITH WIN XP, SHARED FOLDER AND PRINTERS WORKS OK. http://bovbjerg.net/windows-7/win7-cannot-ping-self.php
Then all of a sudden all XP machines cease to connect to Windows 7 server shares. I had two events which conspired against me. The problem is that even when the workgroups are not the same it sorta kinda maybe sometimes works depending on which OS you are using. Simple file sharing was on, as I recall.

And was easy to change & test. If you are using Static addresses make sure you can ping the IP address of each computer. i set up a user on win 7 and i logged in as thet user on my laptop and had full access. Windows XP always installs stuff into Workgroup. The Network and Sharing Center opens up. Connection properties, workgroups, registry values (for ipconfig /all), etc.
I went back and reinstated those services and rebooted and VIOLA!
