Bug? ifconfig in Ubuntu should show you the mac that VMware has assigned (it will probably be 00:50:56:something or 00:0C:29:something). I do not have any firewall rules in guest: /sbin/iptables -L shows no rules. You can not post a blank message.

Oddly, if I log in to the router (a SonicWall TZ 170) I can ping the vm just fine. Also open the network adapter to check if you are actually connecting to VMnet8 network address. So here's the rub. I have not built any VMs from scratch yet.
