While you are connected through the VPN can you ping the IP address of the machine/server/computer ? It can be part of a domain or simply standalone. Questions: 1.What is the IP address of the server/computer that has the attached external drive? Does it have a static IP or a dynamic one? "I tried 192.168.1.6 instead of typing in \\diskgo, but it didn't work"- from this I guess that .1.6 is the IP You can do a few things: -Manually add a domain suffix so FQDN isn't needed. -Make a manual entry in the each local hosts file for the server(s) needed. -Make the etc The only reason I had suggested the DHCP reservation is because on Cisco and SonicWALL VPNs I'd seen a similar issue before and it resolved it.
